The reliability of the Caya® diaphragm used in combination with the Caya® gel is comparable to that of the traditional diaphragm.
The cellulose present in the Caya® gel forms an extra barrier between the diaphragm and the cervix.
The viscosity of the Caya® gel and the lactic acid contained therein with its acidic pH value of 3.8 has a motility-inhibiting effect on the sperm cells.
Caya® gel reduces sperm motility. Caya® gel is applied before the community in the protrusions of the membrane and on the outer ring of the Caya® pessary. The pH value of the gel is acidic, as a result of which the environment in the vagina becomes unfavorable for the sperm cells. At the same time, the gel has a beneficial effect on the flora in the vagina. This gives improved performance in two respects.
In the event of repeated intercourse, additional gel can be introduced into the vagina by means of the supplied applicator, whereby the Caya® diaphragm must remain in position.
The Caya® gel is odorless, colorless and water-soluble.
Caya® gel is identical to the gel of the Dutch Association for Sexual Reform (NVSH), which was on the market from 1972 to 2002. Already in 1989 (Dittrich 1989), comparative studies of various pessary gels and creams have determined that this lactic acid-based agent is as safe as nonoxynol-9-containing products, but that the risk of side effects is extremely low.
